Frequent use of a washing machine leads to the accumulation of detergent, limescale, and residues in the drawer and rubber seals. This buildup not only reduces washing efficiency but also creates unpleasant smells on clothes. The problem is more common than it seems: according to lab studies, the biofilm that forms on seals and the drawer can harbor bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which thrive in moist, residue-rich environments. By adding detergent directly to the drum, you prevent these residues from concentrating in the drawer, thus reducing the breeding ground for microorganisms.

Fabric softener is another silent culprit. "If you're going to use fabric softener, do so in moderation to avoid blockages," warns the specialist. Additionally, this product can reduce the absorbency of towels and sportswear, and damage delicate fabrics like microfiber. A study from the University of Illinois found that continuous use of fabric softener reduces towel absorbency by up to 30% after 20 washes. To keep the appliance in good condition, it's advisable to run a maintenance wash every one to two months, depending on usage.
